S03 Episode 2: Linda Lenzke, Writer, Showrunner

Episode image card

Linda is a writer and blogger. She has a site called "Mixed Metaphors, Oh My!" that she has been doing since 2013. She joined a Facebook group called Madison Indie Filmmakers and after going to some of the meet-ups they encouraged her to start a new web series for one of the ideas she had. So she did. With the help of the people she met in this group, she is running a new show called "Hotel Bar". I met with her at the Madison Public Library downtown to ask her how this all happened.

Also, I share another one of the pop-up interviews I did at the Hibernation Liberation event. But the person only told me her first name. So, if anyone knows who she is please let her know that she's on the show for me.

Hotel Bar is in production right now. Subscribe to the YouTube channel to find out when it begins. Hotel Bar - web series channel on YouTube

You are beautiful.

I was out riding my bike the other day. For some reason, I decided to take a different path than I normally do.

On East Washington Avenue I saw three people, one of them was on a ladder. They were just finishing up what looked like a mural that said "You are beautiful" on it.

I stopped and decided to go ask them what it was.

Next month I'm going to be releasing a podcast about things just like this. It's called American Bandito.
The concept was this - I put up an ad on Facebook that said "Are you an artist in Madison? I would like to talk to you." And that was it. There was no pre-screening, people signed up and I scheduled an interview with them.

I wanted to know about people that are making art, people that are just starting out, people that are trying to get back into it.

I know very little about the art community that's happening in my own town and I wanted to change that.

Starting …

Holly Meyers

I begin my quest to meet artists in Madison, WI with Holly Meyers.

After moving to Madison she was inspired by life changes and her new city's creative energy to devote herself more fully to art. She tells me about how early in life she lost all of her artwork in a fire. Then took that opportunity to reinvent what she does.

We discuss how, even with kids and a job, she finds the time to create. Plus, she found out that claiming your living room as a studio on your taxes is an actual thing you can do!

S02 Episode 1: What made you decide to start your own business?

This episode I ask the question:
"What made you decide to start your own business?"

It's the first episode of the second season. This time I travel around Madison and meet with people that own or operate galleries, stores and other places that sell and promote local art.

If you create things in your spare time, you've probably thought about trying to do it for a living or maybe you're just trying to get the guts to put it out there for the first time.

So what would it take to follow through and actually do it?

To help understand what it's like, listen to what these local creatives say about what they do.

Here's a list of the places I talk to in each episode.
